Morality for Beautiful Girls (2001)
Mma Ramotswe's agency is suffering serious cash flow problems. Mma Makutsi is worried for her job. At the same time, Mr J L B Matekoni is starting to act quite outside his normal behaviour. He's slacking off during the day and has lost interest in his business. Something's wrong, but what? And can he recover?
Mma Ramotswe sees an opportunity to kill several birds with one stone. Mr J L B Matekoni has some office space that is rarely used. Now the pair are engaged, Mma Ramotswe doesn't see any reason why she can't put that space to better use, rent free, of course. So, she moves out of the building housing her detective agency, and into Mr J L B Matekoni's garage.
Mma Ramotswe is also very concerned about Mr J L B Matekoni's business. He seems incapable of looking after it at the moment, and the apprentices certainly can't be trusted. So who better than someone else who is now on the spot - Mma Makutsi. Mma Makutsi is rapt, which is more than can be said for the apprentices, at least at the start. She is even more rapt when she learns of her new title, Assistant Manager of Mr J L B Matekoni's business.
In the meantime, an "important government man", who lives in Gaborone, but also has a country property on which he lives with his mother, brother and sister-in-law brings Mma Ramotswe a much-needed case. This important man believes his brother is being poisoned. But, worse, that he's being poisoned by his wife, the important man's sister-in-law.
Mma Ramotswe agrees to visit the property, out Limpopo way, to determine the truth. On the way to such a determination she discovers the truth is not always the same as the obvious. And the government man discovers that the poisoning is the least of his problems.
Concurrently, the flashily self-important promoter of a beauty pageant seeks Mma Ramotswe's help. His fingers have been burned by a winner who turned out not to be what she claimed. Now, he's decided he needs someone to sniff out the truth about each contestant, and pick the one who is least likely to cause a scandal. It's a tough job, but Mma Ramotswe has her hands full. So she gives Mma Makutsi her first full case. Of course, Mma Makutsi's up to the task. Or is she?
