Charlie & Fanwell
Charlie and Fanwell are Mr J L B Matekoni's apprentices. We take quite some to find their given names, especially Fanwell, whose name we don't find out until the 10th book, Teatime for the Traditionally Built, and we never find out their family names.
But Charlie and Fanwell are extremely important characters, principally because they give Mma Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi, and Mr J L B Matekoni seemingly endless opportunities to riff on the subject of disappearing traditions and lost morality.
However, without spoiling any stories, the two apprentices, especially the older one, Charlie, sometimes play actual roles in one of the several stories that comprise each novel.
These young men are undertaking what appears to be an endless apprenticeship, especially to Mr J L B Matekoni, who just can't bring himself to rid his garage of them. They can talk of nothing but girls, they don't listen to their boss, and they don't understand why they should undertake slow methods, when there are quicker alternatives, constantly mistaking speed for quality. And, oh my gosh, wipe off all dirty marks? That shouldn't be their job.
Mma Makutsi gets them to work properly for a time, while Mr J L B Matekoni is indisposed. But unfortunately that eventually blows up in all their faces, as it was inevitably going to.
Nonetheless, Fanwell eventually completes his apprenticeship, but Charlie looks like being an apprentice for life.
